1934 Bugatti Type59 3.3 Litre Grand Prix #14
BUGATTI GP model by Harold Pratley
In the 1950’s the 1:12 scale model was created from scratch by master builder Harold Pratley (see Model Cars by Ken W. Purdy); it is presented in a wood and Plexiglas case. In excellent condition, the model measures 12 ½ l. x 5 w. x 3 ¾ in. h.
Erwin Goldschmidt (1916-1970) acquired in the 1950’s in England
Anthony Goldschmidt (1942-2014), by descent 1970
With five straight Targa Florio wins from 1925-1929, then the first Monaco GP in 1929 followed by 1930, 1931 and 1933, and 2000 victories overall to their credit, the Bugatti GP’s were the most successful racing car ever. Today, only five Type 59’s out of a total of eight racing cars built have survived; the Type 59 in the Ralph Lauren collection is chassis 59122, the first of the eight 59’s built at the Molsheim factory. The great Tazio Nuvolari raced car #14 in the 1934 French Grand Prix at Montlhery (see photo above), and in 1934 the Type 59 won the Belgian GP with René Dreyfus aboard.
